GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Last year, a Detroit woman was reunited with her daughter in Grand Rapids after the state’s first Michigan’s Missing Persons Day at Ford Field.
Organizers hope to solve other such cases at a second event May 19 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.
There are 3,000 reports of missing people in Michigan, and 100,000 nationwide.
“Some call that the ‘silent mass disaster,’” state police detective Sarah Krebs said this morning. “All these people unaccounted for. Where did these people go?”
Krebs spoke at a press conference at DeVos Place announcing the upcoming event. Police are hoping that family and friends of missing people will attend the ceremony, and give police the chance to update databases with new technology, including DNA.
DNA can be compared to remains of about 40,000 nationwide.
Online profiles of those missing can also be added to a nationwide database available to police and the public.
People can also provide information to police in old cases, or report new cases.
During the Detroit event, 500 attended, including families of 42 missing people. Police were able to find four of the missing people who were still alive. Police were also able to end decades-long mysteries for others by linking DNA to remains on file.
About half of the families of the missing people had not reported their loved ones missing until they showed up at the event, said state police Lt. Chris McIntire, in charge of the Rockford post.
The event in Grand Rapids runs from 2-7 p.m., with volunteers asked to show up at 1 p.m.
Free child identification kits will also be available so that parents can have fingerprints of their children.
The hope is to raise awareness of the issue and impact of missing people. Family and friends of those missing will be recognized, with a candlelight vigil at the close of the ceremony.
Those who have missing family or friends are encouraged to bring photographs, dental records and radiographs to update digital databases. They will be scanned on-site and returned immediately. Families can wear memorial t-shirts of loved ones, or bring posters to display.
Organizers asked family members to wear yellow.
Family members are asked to pre-register to help commemorate missing loved ones. To register, contact Krebs at 313-215-0675 or krebss@michigan.gov.

Comment by Pam Digna on May 10, 2012 at 8:05am Unfortunely I can not make it to Grand Rapids due to travling difficulties at this time. I wish it could be in Detroit again this year close enough for me to attend, however I realise there is a great need for the event to move from one location to another because there are many limits for many of us with missing loved ones. The hope that this event give to us the loved one searching is profound. I have more knowledge of the progress and limitations of the law inforcement than I did before. I attended the 1st vigil for my daughter and others here close to me in my state. In sharing in the event with fellow victims of this horrible ordeal it has brought me a little peace knowing that finally her family's DNA is on file and her case if updated. I feel that anyone with a missing loved one would benifit from this event no matter how painful it is for the moment to attend. The rewards slowly filter in by knowing that you have come one step closer to getting the best knowledge out there for your family and missing piece of your heart. Happy Mothers day and yes son to follow will be Fathers day so do this for both of you. Pamela Digna mother of Missing ---Alicia Digna

Families and Friends affected by the mysterious disappearance of a loved one and the communities and organizations that assist to bring them home.
The event will be a campaign to raise awareness of the issues and impacts surrounding missing persons in the State of Michigan. Families and Friends affected by the unexplained disappearance of loved ones will be recognized on this day. Law Enforcement agencies and the community organizations that assist with these cases will be showcased at the event. This event will give law enforcement a chance to update their databases with new technologies such as DNA (family reference samples) and online profiles of the missing people (www.namus.gov). Officers will be taking tips on old cases and conducting interviews on any new cases that may be reported at the event. Community organizations will be assisting with stimulating speakers, promoting child safety, and handing out free child ID kits. The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil ceremony to commemorate the missing members of our community.
Families of missing persons are encouraged to bring photographs, dental records, radiographs (X-rays) to update our digital databases. These will be scanned on-site and immediately returned. Families and Friends should feel free to wear memorial t-shirts, bring posters and any literature to display and commemorate the missing loved one. We ask that you wear yellow to show your support for the cause.
Family members of missing persons should pre-register to ensure that their loved on is commemorated in the ceremony.
