You all are enjoying my Shamrock Shake story so much, thought I'd tell you another one. This go back a few years, back before digital cameras were popular, when you had to take your film to the store to get it developed.

My son was young, maybe 4 or 5 years old. He's going into college next year. He got into the habit of calling me his buddy rather than Dad or Daddy, and I called him my little buddy.

My wife sent me to the store one day with several roles of film, my little buddy came along for the ride, as I would usually sneak him a candy bar or something without mom finding out.

I get to the store and I'm standing at a kiosk filling out the forms to send my film in for developing. A police officer walks up to the other side of the kiosk and starts filling out his forms. My Son was always very friendly and talkative to anyone, and for some reason mesmerized by men in uniforms. So he see's the officer and says to him "HI!." The officer looks down at him and says "Hi Son, how are you?" My son says "Good, are you a policeman?" I hear him say. The officer says "Yes I am, whats your name?" Here where the trouble begins.....

My wife had gone to great length to teach my son that if a policeman or fireman ever asked him who he was that he give them his full name and address.....

So, my "little buddy" starts his spew....."My Name ise Eric, I live on Douglas Lane in Crete Illinois, my phone number is 555-555-5555." The police officer says "Well, Eric, are you here alone." This is when my ears perked up and I started to take notice of the covnversation. My little buddy says "No, I'm with him." The police officer says "Oh, is he your daddy?" Then my little buddy throws me under the bus....."No, he's not my daddy, he's my buddy" I knew I was in trouble now.

I sort of laughed a nervous smile and said "He's funny, Hi, I am his father." The officer says "Sir, can I see some Identification?" I said "Huh? For what?" The police officer says "Sir, turn around and put your hands behind your back." I said "No, wait. this is a misunderstanding, I'm his father." THe police officer says "Sir, if you don't do as I say I'm going to have to force you."

So, I got cuffed, they took my ID, called it in. 3 more police officers show up. I see people in the store that I know, looking at me like "OH MY GOD!" THen after about an hour they finally figure out that I really am the boys father. SO now the police officer is apologizing and I'm trying to be okay about it, because if my Son was really missing, I'd like the police to be so thorough and direct.

We patch it all up and my little buddy and I are headed home. All the way home he is telling me how he played with the radio in the cop car, and the siren and all this stuff...."Buddy...he's got a BIG gun in his car"......

We get home, he jumps out of the car, we go inside, the wife says "What took so long?" My little buddy says "Dad," yeah this time he said "Dad"...."Dad got in trouble with the cops."

If I told you the story in person it would not be as good. I have always been better at expressing myself in writing more so than voice.

Maybe...I like the idea of it. Having all the stories written down. But I'm not a writer, my grammar, punctuation, all that is not good.
that was a great story, but i hope all police will do the same thing,
Aww how cute.... I bet his mom was confused. That was funny and it is cute how he called you buddy instead of daddy...
wish i had a connection like that with my dad....
