In August of 1979 a baby just three months shy of her very first birthday was raped and beaten by a man named Christopher Cooper. Little Monica Williams laid in her hospital bed for five days fighting for her life because her little heart was strong and her mother says she was a fighter for sure. Poor little Monica lost the battle for her life on August 16, 1979.
Monica’s mother, Becky Potter of Findlay, Ohio said, “I need to keep him in prison for this. There is no excuse, no excuse, and as long as I’m able to walk and my jaw is able to flap you will hear from me.”

“She never had a chance to be a cheerleader graduate from high school, or go on to college,” she continued. “It’s very tough. All you have to do is look at the picture and see she was going to be a good girl.”

Becky honestly thinks if this man is set free back into society, everyone will be in danger. The family is saying the best way to stop him from being released on parole would be for everyone they can find to write a letter to the parole board requesting he stay in prison and away from children.

“He’s murdered once an infant,” says Monica’s uncle, Michael Saum. “If you can find an infant worthy of lusting over and the things he’s done to her, there is no excuse in it you can’t rehabilitate someone like that.”

I sent the following email to the Parole Board today:

Dear Sir/Madam

I understand that Mr. Cooper is up for parole for an unconscionable event that occurred over 30 years ago. I am also sure that Mr. Cooper deliberated on his actions over that course of time...maybe he has found peace with God over this, I don't know. I don't know the man.

But the shocking memory of his action, and how it cost the life of a little girl yet to enjoy the primacy of her life, will stay forever in his mind. That may be punishment enough, but the fact also remains that her family now has an even stronger memory of that same event.

It is one thing to derive pleasure from a victim who has the ability to fight back--quite another towards a defenseless small child--tiny in this respect. I am sure that your offices have heard that argument from the prosecution any odd number of times.

The gravitas of the current motion, however, and for which you must avail, is the prospect for recidivism for Mr. Cooper. Seeing how this past murder and his singular involvement in it must weigh heavily on his mind (and yours), I strongly submit that his sentiment for even hurting (never mind murdering) other--similar--defenseless creatures remains with him, and thus might cause him to relapse into his former mode. The slightest provocation may cause that sentiment, who knows? His current prison life is not punishment enough...and I am sure that other prisoners feel the same way that I do, welcoming him back into the fold where he belongs.

Although I subscribe to a Christian ethic, my intelligence tells me that he might be susceptible to further similar acts. It is not for me to say "a life for a life", "an eye for an eye." While God alone may forgive his act, we on earth can say house the prisoner for later reconciliation with God.

He should not go free.

Can You Meet The Deadline?

Christopher Cooper raped and then murdered 9 month-old Monica Williams. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. On December 1, 2009, Christopher Cooper will appear before the Parole Board in Ohio asking to be released because "he so very remorseful for a crime committed" 30 years ago.


While he sits with his hand folded before the parole board, he is clean shaven, his nails sparkling and bright, looking like a shiny new penny, asking to be forgiven, hopeful the parole board will grant him a second chance.

We, this means you and I, have the opportunity to see that Christopher Cooper remains behind bars. I realize it is easier to email a request or a letter of protest, but, in this situation, a letter mailed with a stamp and a return address will have the impact needed to keep this man from being released on our city streets. Should he be released he may not be required to register as a sex offender as the crime happened 30 years ago. Regardless this man needs to remain in prison........CONTINUED ON BLOG
