Sent to both US House Rep Joe Walsh and US Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois.

Dear Senator Durbin: My name is Angela Montgomery and I am a constituent in your district. I am writing this letter addressed to you for the second time (first was in Jan. 2010) asking for your support of pending legislation.  The Help Find the Missing Act - Billy's Law (HR 1300 / SR 702). According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, over 4,000 unidentified remains are discovered each year. After one year, 1,000 of these bodies remain unidentified. With tens of thousands of people reported missing each year, it is likely that a family member, friend, or loved one is looking for that unidentified person and simply can't find them due to the absence of a cooperative effort by law enforcement across the country.
Some law enforcement agencies have a lackadaisical attitude when they receive a report for the “voluntarily missing” and often there is very little effort to search for them. The problem is when the case goes long term. If there is any follow-up at all, often it is long after the initial report. Often those long term cases have not been resolved because the missing person has died and their remains lay unidentified in a county morgue or cemetery.
When my friend Beth Bentley of Woodstock, IL went missing on 5/23/10 my whole world changed. I realized that Illinois has over 200 active missing person's cases. Did you know that? And that some remains are never identified or take many years to identify because this framework is not in place.  Here is the reason why: there is no national protocol in place to assist investigators to bridge the gap between missing persons and unidentified persons cases. The Help Find the Missing Act will bridge this gap! The National Missing Persons and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) is by far becoming one of the best ways for the public and law enforcement agencies across the country to work together to help bring missing loved ones home! Since its launch the database of unidentified decedents and missing persons has proved essential in solving many cases. With the passing of Billy's Law, this number only stands to grow. Unfortunately, without the funding of Billy's Law not all law enforcement agencies are able to allocate the resources necessary to use the NamUs system. The passing of Billy's Law would make it possible for agencies across the country to input information on their unidentified decedents, increasing the number of case resolutions and potentially bringing closure to families of missing persons all across our country. I support this funding and hope that you do as well. I respectfully urge you to pass HR 1300 / SR 702 when it comes before you.
I look forward to your response. Respectfully,

Angela Montgomery

ACTION ALERT! THE TIME IS NOW TO HELP ALL MISSING - THE WAY IS HERE - IT'S THROUGH BILLY'S LAW

There is an overwhelming number of missing children and adults in the US ...there is an overwhelming number of unidentified remains each one has a name, loved and was loved. If there is a system in place that is proven to help identify or bring a loved one home how could anyone object? NamUs is the only centralized database used as a tool to connect the broken system.

State by state clearinghouses are good but if only used within each state and a person is missing out of a particular state then the clearinghouse within that state would not be able to locate the person, the databases do not connect. NamUs is the only centralized database and has proven to work.

Billy's Law if passed into law will help provide the funding to educate our law enforcement, medical examiners and coroners to learn the database and make the necessary entries.

Every parent or family member missing a loved one needs to know everything is being done to locate and bring home their loved one.

This is for everyone won't you please take a few minutes of time, all the information is provided in Peace4, email YOUR STATE U.S. legislators and follow up with a phone call ask for your Federal Congress persons and Federal Senators to co sponsor HR1300 and SR702. EVERYTHING DOES RIDE ON HOPE AND FAITH FOR A BETTER TOMORROW!

(Jan Smolinski - Billy's Mom)

Update:  Working on media lists and tagging each state with local media tags.  If you know of news stations, newspapers, radio stations for specific states please leave it in the comment section of that state and I'll add it as a tag.

Future will start placing the individual state links on state specific facebook sites, media, law enforcement, etc.

Done adding the Billy's Law logo to each state and adding a lead in paragraph that shows up when sharing on Facebook.  States are ready to be shared!
