Emma, It just passed legislation in your state of West Virginia, the day before yesterday Feb 25, 2009. The Silver Alert Plan, will increase efforts to track elderly missing persons according to Delegate Larry Williams, D-Preston. It now goes before the senate:)

Lavanda it is so important that we have this, so many of our elderly disapear. They dont just disappear because of dementia, they come up missing because they are easier prey for those who are looking to rob, or do bodily harm from another human being. It is so tragic, and so very sad. I love you for this. They need us too. Hugs

Because Silver Alerts is relatively "new", each state that has become involved have varying criteria. For the most part, to answer your question Miranda, mentally incompetent does fit into the category however...I am finding out that those that "qualify" are those who actually reside in a nursing or group home setting. As does autism, mentally challenged, etc.

Thus far I see that North Carolina is the most active participant in Silver Alerts and has the broadest criteria to be deemed a Silver Alert. Presently the alert is out for Karen Joy Cauble due to the fact she has BiPolar concerns and does not have access to her medications. (I do not know if she is a group home resident or resides at home with her mother, Paulette.)

Presently, 11 states have implemented the program. Others have pending legislation to have the program adopted. These are the present states that have Silver Alerts;

Eleven states have implemented Silver Alert programs:

— California
— Colorado
— Georgia
— Illinois
— Kentucky
— Louisiana
— Michigan
— North Carolina
— Ohio
— Texas
— Virginia

It very sad when they become that age and get so confused I take care Mother and she has dementia.

I think this was good ideal we have a lady missing here she just got in car drove off a few days ago, when I came back from Cue Center last year after going up learning more about Missing and DNA and Humain Trafficking I came home, and two elderly one with Dementia the othe Altimers after what search they did they were found just dead off a main Rt, it was very sad, I have worked many in nursing I learned there a way of talking to them to get them to do what you need them to do , the girls at work would look for me because the way they were trying to get them to shower or what ever they did not take time to work up a conversation with them and out blue just I would say did you say you wanted a shower or what ever we need them to do, now working with my own Mother is harder because she is my Mother and it a 24 hour job,

There are alarms you can put on your doors just in case they try to leave and the cost is not bad and worth it all.

My father died at 91 the last 5 he had progressively worse episodes of dementia but for the most part he was fully functional. That is until blind as a bat he took the family car for a joy ride. I had to call 15 different municipal Police depts to find him. it took 6 hours and luckily he stopped to ask a cop for directions and I found him.A Silver alert would have been a good thing to have.

Does adult disabled include those mentally incompetent?

Thank you Lavanda for starting this group. I remember when I was a little girl my mother telling me how her and my grandmother use to have to walk the neighborhood looking for my great grandmother. Of course the used the term senile then. I then grew up to witness my grandmother suffer from dementia and worrying about her taking off she was 98 when she died. Now my own mother is in her 80s and showing signs of dementia herself.

This is a subject that touches home for me and I am glad there is an alert system out there now and I will do what I can to help get the alerts out there as I hear about them. Bless you ~
