NCIC Missing & UID Statistics - Why it's so difficult to locate our Nation's Missing Persons

Federal law requires law enforcement to report missing children, but not adults (or unidentified bodies). That means that the databases designed to help investigators are incomplete (and often unused)! The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is the current system used by law enforcement by which missing and unidentified person cases are tracked and matched. And up until the creation of National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NamUs), a clearinghouse for missing persons and…See More

Profile Information

Which Peace4 Team would you most like to participate in?
Sleuths, Legislative
Are you involved with other organizations (please include link if applicable) relating to Missing Persons and Domestic Violence...and if so, please share a bit about here...
I am a volunteer with the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department – Coroner Division. I assist the Unidentified-Missing Persons Coordinator, Deputy Coroner Investigator David Van Norman. San Bernardino County is the largest county in the nation and our Division investigates nearly 10,000 deaths annually. I assist Van Norman to attempt to identify nearly 100 unidentified deceased persons per year. We are handling approximately 250 active long term unidentified persons cases going back to the early 1900’s of which I follow up on the thousands of matches we receive to these cases per year. I also assist the Sheriff Department in administering its over 1,200 long-term missing person cases.

I am registered with NamUs and I am Case Manager for all of the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's Missing Person Cases entered thus far.
What brought you to Peace4? What are you most hoping to accomplish here?
I am a missing person advocate. I created Missing Children’s Poster Partners in California back in 2005 to assist families of the long term missing teens and young adults. Although most missing persons return within a few days to two weeks, there are some who do not return. Some law enforcement agencies have a lackadaisical attitude when they receive a report for the “voluntarily missing” and often there is very little effort to search for them.
How did you hear about Peace4?
I found it through Jan Smolinski
Do you have a Missing Loved One? If Yes, please include their name, location missing, etc. (If not, simply answer No)
approximately 1 year
Positive Suggestions/Ways you may be able to improve/contribute to Peace4?
I am not sure yet. I have only visited a few times. I think that I have a vast understanding of the way missing persons and unidentified persons cases are handled and my be of assistance here when needed.
In order for us to properly process your request to become a Peace4 member please answer all questions as thoroughly as possible so we completely understand why you would like to become a Peace4 member. Do you understand? Yes or No
yes
