I know that was the case in my sister's disappearance, anyhow. There was also pride - God forbid someone find out my father's daughter was arrested for prostitution (which would happen if our case had ever gone public), or that she had spent time living on the streets - we were told, as kids, to tell people that Judy was working as a bank teller in New York City.
