This suspect claimed that he backed out before the act was completed, however. Both boys were arrested originally for conspiracy to commit burglary and arson. Suspect#1: Jeremy Stephens, who had originally given the statement about the conspiracy to burglarize and burn the Smith trailer, pled guilty to Murder 2nd with the understanding that if he agreed to testify truthfully against suspect #2 and passed a polygraph on his statement, he could withdraw his plea and plead guilty to Manslaughter. The Smith failed the polygraph and pled guilty to Murder 2nd and has been in prison since 1998. As I read through this list, I understand the unresolved grief so many live with. Getting involved in researching an unresolved murder isn't anything I ever imagined for myself even during the up and down years experiencing Joan's case. I have always been the studious type, and focus on details in research. I do hope once I can help get Joan's case reexamined responsibly, I can apply what I have learned. It is wonderful in the areas where authorities reach out for help from the public. That isn't the case everywhere. I would also like to see better sunshine laws that allow greater transparency especially when there is the level of discrepency I have discovered in Joan's case. There are too many, for assorted reasons, that want to cover up wrongdoing. In doing so, they victimize the victims all over again and leave others vulnerable. Eve
