I was just talking to a Mom whose son has been missing for roughly 6 months. She lives on the East Coast and he went missing in Los Angeles CA. She filed a missing persons report shortly after he went missing. The accepted the missing persons report but have renigged and put a warrant out for an arrest due to the car he was driving has been reported stolen (he was supposed to turn it back into the dealership, he didn't actually steal the car). They have told his mother that his missing persons case is closed because he has a warrant out for his arrest.
When my mom went missing, she had a warrant out for her arrest for failure to appear in court. They still kept her missing persons case open.
I am feeling so much frustration for this family. If he is harmed, well then of course he couldn't return the car... Like my own mom. How could she go to court when she was no longer with us.
I am in shock and have never heard of any LE agency doing this. Have you?

Comment by Jesse 'Opie' Ross on May 9, 2012 at 6:29pm Idiots, first they need establish if he is endangered, then they can worry about a crime. Only good side to this is they look harder for criminals than missing.
Comment by Stephanie Thompson on May 9, 2012 at 5:46pm That would be my first gut reaction to tell her to do. She is headed out to LA and hopefully with her face to face like that, they will reconsider. I am just flabbergasted that they would even consider it ya know.
Comment by Maureen Reintjes-Peace4 Admin on May 9, 2012 at 2:34pm I would think that would not be a widespread practice. I was happy when an auto theft detective was working with me to get a car embezzlement charge brought against my husband. I didn't want my husband arrested but I wanted the car found as at that point in time he could have very well have been in the trunk of the car or held hostage. There was no talk of dropping the missing person's case.
Maybe this family should start climbing the ladder and talk to people over their detective to see if this was handled correctly.
