Randy Leach Missing Since April 15, 1988

In the spring of 1988; 220 lb., 17 year old Randy Leach of rural Linwood, KS was looking forward to his high school graduation and spending the summer contemplating his next life move atop his brand new John Deere Lawn Tractor. No long range plans, no pressing matters to attend to, just a summer doing what he loved to do, restoring his; pride and joy; 1966 Mustang, mowing lawns and hanging out with friends. Sweet.

But that was not in the cards.

On April 15, 1988 while attending a pre-graduation party at a friends rural home with 100 other people, Randy and the family car, a gray 4-door, 1985 Dodge 600 sedan disappeared. As fast as Houdini could escape a milk can, Randy was gone, never to be heard from again, and the investigators and rumor mill went to work.

Lets back up. Early in the evening of April 15th as Randy was readying to leave, his father, Harold gave him a twenty to stop by the K-mart in Lawrence to pick up a $15 bottle of water glass wax to put on his new tractor to hold the paint. That and the money he already had on him gave Randy approximately $50 to $60 in his pocket when he left the house. With a goodbye and a dont be out too late; from Harold, Randy walked out of the house and drove down the drive.

The next thing we know, it is approximately 6:45 PM, Randy and his friend Steve Daughtery are cruising around Linwood (pop. 300) and stop at Stouts Corner, the local quickie mart, where Randy bought $3 worth of gas, two candy bars and 2 cans of Pepsi, Steve purchased a six-pack of beer.

Maureen,

Can you "Message All Members" what you have written below on the FB page? It's very touching, and with enough of these, maybe SOMEONE will finally step forward.

Thank you, all!

I'd be glad to. This is my son Ryan. I would do just as you have. God makes us mothers forever and we are their protectors. That doesn't change just because he is gone. You are a wonderful exampl of what a good mother is.

I'll be glad to reply all for you. You want me to say anything special?

Love you Cherry!  Of all you said these words are the most important "Bad things happen when good people do nothing."

I think people have heard me tell the story of leaving a fine dining establishment with my Mom when I was a young woman or maybe in my late teens.  There was a waitress sitting on the curb, crying.  I had seen my Mom watching her while we were eating but didn't pay much attention, was lost in conversation with my sisters.  Well my Mom had seen this young waitress having a tough time so when she saw her sitting on the curb she sat down beside her and just held this waitress in her arms and stayed with her until this young woman's ride came.  I told my Mom that was a beautiful thing to do and she said words that stayed with me all my life "If my daughters were sitting on a curb crying I would hope that someone would care enough to help them."

To me Randy's parents have been sitting on that curb for far too many years ..... everyone needs to sit beside them and HELP.  And, certainly a grown woman who has some information should know to come forward...it shouldn't be a choice it should be an automatic response to do what is right.  Does she really think her loved ones will stop loving her because she didn't fill them in on her past?  Doesn't sound like her life is based on trusting those around her.  I'm sorry but there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for letting Randy's parent suffer even a second longer if she could have information that might help bring answers.

Thank you, Cherry. I want to post my comment to all members of the FB page, along with some questions for them. I was wondering if you could follow it by also "Messaging All." I really appreciate what you have to say.

PS Randy looks very much like my own son. I can't imagine the pain you have been through and I am sorry. I have also come to believe that God has a plan for each one of us. I use to think our plan ends when our lives do. I don't think that anymore. God is always bringing light out of darkness. He works through us in spite of us. Randy's life still has great purpose.

Dear Cynthia,

This is an age old question. One I too have heard from friends and family members. This is what I think. Trust in God. Always put the sin in the sonlight. No one should ever allow anyone to stay in their sin. The right thing to do often asks you to trust God. I can think of a million reasons to find a murderer and not one not to.

One Sunday my husband and I stopped to get water on the way to church. A woman almost ran into the wall. A SUV tried to ram her car, a little boy sat in the front seat. I immediately took video with my phone and yelled at the man to leave. I was calling 911. He glared at me and shook his fist. My husband came out and told me I was going to get us killed and there were many who depended upon me. I got out of the car and went to the woman's car. I said someone has to help her. The attacker left but kept circling the station. A motorcycle man stopped and stood with me. I told the woman she had to stop this for her sons sake. She was afraid she had been abused for 13 yrs. I told her she was the little boys only hope. The police came. I filled out the police report and turned the video over to the police. The officer asked me if I was her mother. I said no but I had a daughter who was abused and I understood. The officer said he too had a mother who was abused. I later found out the man was on parole and he got put back in prison. Bad things happen when good people do nothing. I call it practicing being brave and I often think of the Good Samaritan and how he acted to save the man in the ditch. It's what God wants us to do. Sacrifice is true love. It's the message I want to leave with my children. Do what's right according to God and then trust in Him to keep you safe.

I know it's hard to ask people to sacrifice but it is what God wants them to do. You are doing what's right. You are honoring and showing love to Randy. It's what he deserves. No matter how long it takes. I'm praying for you. Stay strong and t

I had an experience very recently that kind of split me open. Randy's case is nearly twenty-three years old. That means that not only have people come and gone from the Linwood area, but adults who were children then, now have grandchildren. Lives have changed drastically. Many of the persons of interest have even passed on, taking secrets with them. many people who were running around with the wrong crowd then, have made dramatic changes in their own lives now, and are happily involved in good careers and families.

I've used Facebook to find many of these people. I try to gently encourage them to come forward, while not making any accusations about their possible involvement in Randy's disappearance.

I terrified someone last night though. It was obvious from her FB photos and info that she had moved on from the rough crowd in the late 1980s. She was/is happy. She did not want to be reminded of those days, nor of any of the people she called friends back then. She's a happy parent and grandparent who wants to protect her life and her family's lives. She has to weigh whether it would be better to come forward with possible theories and put the minds of Randy's parents at ease, or whether it is better to keep her own family safely protected.

I can no longer ask, "How can they keep quiet?"

Open our hearts, share our hope, then we are no longer strangers ,but friends.
